ICCO Investments team visits KAPATAGAN Cooperative

ICCO Investments team comprising of 11 members from different regions, undertook a 2 day visit from 22nd January to  23rd Januray, 2016 to the Kapatagan facility in Gamu, Isabela, Philippines. Led by Mark Joenje, CEO of ICCO Investments, this visit was a part of the Face to Face team meeting which  was held from 21st January to 31st January, 2016 in Phillippines.

KAPATAGAN, the 1st Agri-Business Partner of ICCO Investments in Philippines, started as a registered farmers’ credit and savings cooperative in 1992. Since most of the members of the Cooperative were farmers, KAPATAGAN initiated the organic fertilizer production project called Green Field Organic Fertilizer (GBOF). The consistent efforts of KAPATAGAN, supported by investors like ICCO Investments, have helped in making organic agriculture a widely accepted sustainable agricultural practice in the Philippines.

During the 1st day, the team was able to see the old organic fertilizer production facility which is now in the process of being converted into an organic demonstration farm. After the tour, the ICCO Investment team were served a sumptuous dinner which included Filipino’s special food lechon (roasted pig), mangos, and a number of boiled native vegetables and herbs at the organic restaurant set up by KAPATAGAN. The visit to the old facility was very memorable for the ICCO Investments team. Listening to inspiring stories on KAPATAGAN’s evolution from its key staff was definitely a priceless take away of that night.

On the 2nd day, the team visited the new organic fertilizer production facility which has been funded by ICCO Investments. Without doubt, the new facility which is now located in a 5-ha land and combined with a big building for the warehouse, office, and training facility is a big upgrade from the previous one. It is worth noting that, since its partnership with ICCO Investments in the 2nd quarter of 2014, KAPATAGAN has  significantly doubled its fertilizer production and revenue capacity. Now that its new facility is complete, KAPATAGAN gears to produce this year 450,000 bags of fertilizers which can benefit some 15,000 small farmers in various provinces in the Philippines.

The entire team of ICCO Investments congratulates KAPATAGAN for its achievements and its board, management, workers, members and other business partners, for working together and improving the lives of the small farmers and producers.
